This course gives a solid foundation in using QGIS (Geographic Information System software) as a powerful tool for managing flood risk. Examples and practical exercises cover relevant topics such as flood hazard mapping, identifying buildings at risk and best practice in data management. This focused approach accelerates learning allowing the benefits of the software to be realised from day one.

The course will cover the following topics, using examples and case studies specific to the data and methods relevant in local flood risk management planning:

  • Data management practices (versioning, quality, formats, e.g. GeoPackage)
  • Sourcing data from the web (xyz tiles, WFS, WMS feeds)
  • Raster analysis (DTM / DSM, resampling, calculating differences, extract value at points)
  • Spatial analysis operations
  • Conversion between vector and raster data types
  • Using plugins
  • Creating map layouts

This one-day course will be delivered online via Microsoft Teams. There will be a short (up to one hour) pre-course call the day before to check that all attendees are set up and ready to go.

At the end of the course, participants will have a good understanding of the tools and methods available in QGIS that are relevant to flood risk management planning at the local level.

They will learn:

  • The importance of good data management
  • How to load vector and raster data into QGIS from local and web-hosted sources
  • How to carry out analysis with both vector and raster data sources
  • How to install and use QGIS plug-ins
  • How to create and export maps
Hardware and software
  • A computer with an Internet connection
  • An installation of QGIS version 3.28.11-Firenze LTR (Long Term Release). See https://www.qgis.org/en/site/.
  • Recommend a second screen to allow interaction on Teams at the same time as working with QGIS.
QGIS experience

Participants will get the most value from the course with basic prior knowledge of GIS and the QGIS software, to include:

  • An understanding of what GIS is and what it is used for
  • Adding data layers into QGIS
  • Toggling the visibility of map layers
  • Changing the symbology of, and labelling map layers
